Tickets Refunds

What to do if you longer need your ticket. Your rights and obligations.

Whether you can refund your ticket depends on the type of ticket you have already purchased, and the circumstances of needing a refund.

Refunds to most tickets can be made at the National Rail ticket office you purchased your ticket from  before you travel. Alternatively, you can call the telesales outlet or visit the online retailer that you bought your ticket from.

Ticket Types

Advance Tickets

  • Advance tickets are refundable if the service you are booked to travel on is delayed or cancelled, and you choose not to travel. There is no admin fee for these refunds.
  • Advance tickets are not refundable if you choose not to travel for another reason but can be changed to travel at another time, or on another day.

Changing Advance Tickets

Changes to time or date of travel must be arranged before departure of the first reserved train printed on the ticket, after which the ticket has no value and a new one must be purchased.

If there are still other Advance fares available, you can change it to another Advance fare. You will be charged an admin fee of £10 per ticket. If there are no Advance fares available, you can upgrade the ticket to the most appropriate ticket for the journey you now want to make. You will have to pay any difference in fare and an admin fee of £10 per ticket.

Please note that changes to 'Advance' fares cannot be made on-board the train. If you board a train without a ticket and reservation for that service, a new ticket must be purchased.

Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Tickets

  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets are refundable if the service you planned to travel on is delayed or cancelled, and you choose not to travel. There is no admin fee for these refunds.
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets are refundable if you choose to travel on another day not covered by your orginal Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket. There is no admin fee to refund and rebook.
  • Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets can be refunded if you choose not to travel for a reason other than disruption or cancellation, but there may be an admin fee of no more than £10 per ticket for refunding. Refunds are processed by the original retailer of your ticket.

Changing Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets

These tickets don't require you to travel on a specific train, but they do have restrictions on the time you can travel.

Check at the station or online before you travel: you may find you don't need to pay an additional fare if your outward travel date remains the same.

Off-Peak Day Singles, Off-Peak Singles and the outward part of Off-Peak Return and Off-Peak Day Return tickets are only valid on the date shown on the ticket. If you need to change this date, you will need to cancel your ticket (see below) and buy a new ticket.

Super Off-Peak Day Single, Super Off-Peak Single and the outward part of Super Off-Peak Return and Super Off-Peak Day Return tickets are only valid on the date shown on the ticket. If you need to change this date, you will need to cancel your ticket and buy a new ticket. There is no admin fee to do so.

Anytime Tickets

  • Anytime tickets are refundable if the service you planned to travel on is delayed or cancelled, and you choose not to travel. There is no admin fee for these refunds.
  • Anytime tickets are refundable if you choose to travel on another day not covered by your orginal Anytime ticket. There is no admin fee to refund and rebook.
  • Anytime tickets can be refunded if you choose not to travel for a reason other than disruption or cancellation, but there may be an admin fee of no more than £10 per ticket refunded. Refunds are processed by the original retailer of your ticket.

Changing Anytime tickets

There are no time restrictions on when you can travel with this ticket. An Anytime Single is valid to complete your journey within two days. Outward portions of Anytime Returns are valid for 5 days from the date shown and the Return portion always one calendar month.

Anytime Day tickets are valid only on the date shown on the ticket for 'Anytime Day' tickets
