LATEST TRAVEL ADVICE

National Rail companies are asking passengers to continue to follow the latest advice from government and public health officials.

If travelling by train please check before you travel, book in advance and try to travel at quieter times if you can. To help you travel with confidence the rail industry is:

  • carrying out more frequent and thorough cleaning than normal on trains and at stations
  • making extra train carriages available whenever possible
  • providing better information about how busy services are

Please remember that stations and trains may be busy, so leave plenty of time for your journey.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR SERVICES

Working with government, a number of train companies have begun introducing amended timetables to ensure that passengers get a more reliable service with fewer short notice cancellations at a time when, like in other industries, staff absence is higher because people are affected by the virus. New timetables will focus on known peak travel times to provide trains for key workers, school pupils and those who cannot work from home.

The new timetables will also ensure key freight services can continue to move vital goods such as medicines and food around the country. Changes are being made that allow services to be restored as quickly as possible where this is necessary to meet rising demand when restrictions ease.

To create more space for passengers when there are fewer trains, where possible, more carriages will be added to services.

HOW TRAIN COMPANIES ARE SUPPORTING YOUR JOURNEY

  • Sharing advice and information about how to stay healthy - there are public health posters and other information around stations and on trains.
  • Doing more to ensure our trains and stations are clean. The kind of steps being taken include a greater focus on cleaning high-touch areas on trains and at stations; (such as handrails and ticket machine touch screens), increasing the use of antiviral cleaning products and ensuring toilets are well stocked with soap. Trains are also being checked regularly throughout the day in addition to the cleaning which takes place in depots.
  • Helping people book with confidence by offering fee free refunds should your journey plans change. Further information can be found on our Cononavirus Refunds information page.

Coach and Bus operators that are supplying rail replacement vehicles in certain areas are also working hard to ensure that all enhanced cleaning standards are met, including

  • a greater focus on cleaning high-touch areas on vehicles; (such as handrails),
  • increasing the use of antiviral cleaning products
  • Where coaches have the facilities, ensuring toilets are well stocked with soap

If you require assistance when travelling, especially if there is a rail replacement service instead of a train, we recommend that you contact us to discuss your journey as soon as possible - See Assisted Travel page for details.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

When at our stations or travelling by train, we’re encouraging everyone to follow these guidelines:

Guidance on during your journey on National Rail services
  • Travel at quieter times if you can - generally after 09:30 in cities and large towns or 09:00 everywhere else
  • Purchase your ticket online or on via smartphone apps (where available).
  • To protect yourself and others, please continue to wear a face covering if you can.
  • Paying for tickets by contactless payment, where available.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after your journey. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Follow public health advice on your journey. For example, cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw away the tissue in a bin.
