Recommended route
Start in Glasgow, heading north on the West Highland Line along the Clyde sea lochs, Loch Lomond and Rannoch Moor. From Fort William the train passes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (you’ll recognise it from Harry Potter), and on to the small fishing and ferry port of Mallaig.
From Mallaig, take the CalMac ferry to Armadale on the southern end of the Isle of Skye: you might like to stop here for a few days to explore the Munros and Faerie Pools. Then take the coach over the Skye Bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh, rejoining the train and setting course for Inverness. From there, you’ll get the Main Highland Line south to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
The ferry connection between Mallaig and Armadale on Skye, and the coach connection to Kyle of Lochalsh are included in your ticket.
